Does a Roomba memorize the layout of a room?

None of the models I have do, though I believe some of the newer, higher-end ones have this capability.

In his 2002 book “Robot: The Future of Flesh and Machines”, Rodney Brooks (CTO of iRobot) writes at length about how he believes a lot of (then) AI development was going the wrong way.

His idea was that researchers were trying to build very high level models of things, and do everything in a computationally expensive way… and that encoding much simpler, distributed rules, could lead to outcomes just as effective in a design that was simpler on processing power and RAM, and thus on power requirements.

The early Roombas seem to have embodied this theory.
